运用技术性词汇来描述和比较材料特性，包括导体、绝缘体、导热性、导电性、透明、不透明、半透明、可溶、不溶、磁性、柔韧、坚硬、密度等，并在为特定用途挑选材料、说明理由时准确使用这些术语。
